Synopsis

             Cora goes to the dock every morning looking for work, for food, and hoping today will be the day her father comes home.  He had left months before to find work to support the family. She didn’t know this day would change her entire life.

            Soon after rescuing a Chinese girl name Chi from bullies trying to steal her bike, Cora and Chi find themselves trapped underground when a massive earthquake hits San Francisco. Working together they are able to find their way back to the surface with the help of Oliver, an old friend of Cora’s who she isn’t allowed to talk to after their families had a disagreement.

            The three friends begin to navigate their way through the rubble and destruction hoping to find their families. They go to Cora’s neighborhood and find it completely destroyed. They go to Chinatown looking for Chi’s family but they have left. Oliver’s dad and brother are firefighters and very busy as fires are tearing through the city.

            There are many dangers and challenges in the confusion following the quake. Cora, Chi, and Oliver must stay safe from the aftershocks, falling debris, fires, and the bullies who would like revenge against Cora and Chi. They are never sure if they will find their families, or if they will be forced to start new lives in the city, alone.

Parental Guidelines:    medium-high

This is about the 1906 7.9 San Francisco earthquake. There is a huge amount of destruction and devastation. Cora and Chi are trapped underground immediately after the quake.

Cora finds a bag of gold and keeps it.

Cora and Chi are separated from their families and don’t know if they will ever find them.

Two teenage gang members are after Cora and threaten her and Chi more than once.  At one point they tie Cora to a chair and abandon her.

Prejudice against Chinese Americans is detailed.

There is looting after the quake and officers are given orders to shoot to kill.

Government and military officials set fires to buildings to stop the earthquake fires before the entire city is destroyed.

There are a couple of different fist fights.

Trying to help her family after her father left for work, Cora would steal food from markets and pickpocket strangers.

Corrupt city leaders are using the chaos for their own personal gain.

Recommendation

            This is the third work of historical fiction I’ve read by Jennifer A. Nielsen and I have never been disappointed. She creates interesting characters and weaves them into the historical narrative accurately and effectively for a compelling story.

            This would be a great addition to a fourth grade California classroom studying the San Francisco earthquake, but the story has its share of intense moments. Should work well as a teacher, read-aloud or a small, advanced reader’s group. Otherwise, I feel it’s more appropriate as a middle school age novel. Adults would enjoy reading the story, too.

            Nielsen has many more historical novels in her catalogue and I will look forward to reading them in the future.
